Learn Croatian with Baka

Learn the language of your family

Five-minute Croatian lessons made for the diaspora. Talk to your baka, sing along at the weddings, order a kava like you never left.

Sound familiar?

You understand more than you can say

Duolingo has 40+ languages.

Croatian isn't one of them. Nobody built this for us, so we're building it ourselves.

Phone calls home get shorter.

Not because there's less love, because the words run out. Five minutes a day changes that.

Textbooks teach "the airport."

We teach the kitchen table, the wedding, the match, and the summer trip back home.

How it works

Five minutes a day, with Baka

Quick, game-like lessons that fit real life, built around the moments that matter to diaspora families.

1

Bite-size lessons

Tap, match, listen, speak. Short daily sessions with streaks, easy to start, hard to quit.

2

Hear every word

Baka says every word out loud, at normal speed and slowed down, so you hear how it really sounds at the table.

3

Life, not textbooks

Lessons built around family calls, food, celebrations, and matchday, the Croatian you'll actually use.

Croatian, Serbian and Bosnian

Why Croatian, specifically?

Croatian, Serbian and Bosnian are close relatives, and speakers usually understand each other well. Each one is its own standard with its own everyday words, and families notice the difference. Hrvatski teaches standard Croatian only: kava, kruh, tjedan, tko and što, written in the Latin alphabet with the ijekavian sound of gdje and lijepo. That way you learn the words your baka actually uses.

Questions

Questions families ask

Does Duolingo have Croatian?

No. As of October 2026 Duolingo does not offer a Croatian course, even though it teaches more than 40 languages. Learners usually combine other apps, tutors or university courses instead. Hrvatski is being built to fill that gap, with short daily lessons in standard Croatian made for families with Croatian roots.

What is Hrvatski?

Hrvatski is an upcoming app for learning Croatian, made for the diaspora. Lessons take about five minutes a day and are guided by Baka, a warm Croatian grandmother who says every word out loud and cheers you on. It teaches the Croatian of family calls, the kitchen table, weddings and summers on the coast. Join the waitlist for early access.

Who is Hrvatski for?

Hrvatski is for people with a Croatian connection who want to speak with family. That includes heritage learners who understand more than they can say, partners of Croatians who want to talk with their in-laws, and parents who want to bring the language home for their kids. Complete beginners are welcome too.

Which Croatian does Hrvatski teach?

Hrvatski teaches standard Croatian, written in the Latin alphabet with the ijekavian pronunciation, so you learn forms like gdje, lijepo and mlijeko. Everyday words follow Croatian usage, such as kava for coffee, kruh for bread and tjedan for week. Answers typed without diacritics are accepted and shown with the correct spelling.

I understand Croatian but can't speak it. Will this help?

Yes, that is exactly who Hrvatski is built for. Many heritage learners grew up hearing Croatian at home and understand a lot, but the words do not come when they try to answer. Short daily lessons that make you listen, speak and build sentences help turn what you understand into what you can say.

How hard is Croatian for English speakers?

Croatian is considered a hard language for English speakers. The US Foreign Service Institute places it in Category III, at roughly 44 weeks or 1,100 class hours to reach professional working proficiency. Basic family conversation takes far less, and spelling is easy because Croatian is written almost exactly as it sounds.

Are Croatian, Serbian and Bosnian the same language?

They are closely related standard languages, and speakers generally understand each other well. Each has its own standard and some everyday words differ, for example Croatian kruh and Serbian hleb for bread. Croatian uses the Latin alphabet and the ijekavian pronunciation. Hrvatski teaches the Croatian standard only, so you learn the words your family uses.

How long does it take to learn Croatian with Hrvatski?

Lessons are designed to take about five minutes a day. How fast you progress depends on how often you practise and what you already know, so we do not promise a fixed timeline. Heritage learners who already understand some Croatian often start further along than complete beginners.

When does Hrvatski launch, and what does it cost?

Hrvatski has not launched yet and does not have a release date. It will launch on iPhone and on the web, and pricing will be announced at launch.
